Hochgurgl in the Ötztal
Why shouldn’t your next holiday literally be on a diamond?
The Obergurgl-Hochgurgl Alpine region in Austria is not called the diamond of the Alps for nothing. Hochgurgl is ideally located over 1,900m above sea level, making it the perfect winter sports destination. With snow guaranteed and a comprehensive choice of slopes at over 112 kilometres in length, Hochgurgl really is something special. Unlike larger winter sport destinations, Hochgurgl is far away from all the rushing and stress but still in the middle of the action! The valley is surrounded by peaks and glaciers of up to 3,500 metres. A unique winter landscape.
The area’s name probably comes from the word ‘Gurgall’, which can be translated as ‘place with a glacier crown’. The first people settled in the area in around 7,500 BC. There are traces indicative of pastoral farming and woodland clearing dating back to 4,500 BC.
Even the climate in the region is relatively dry thanks to its surrounding mountains. Despite its lofty location, temperatures in the winter months average just below freezing. In the summer months, the air heats to an average of 16 degrees Celsius.
